Babies born via cesarean section don’t miss out on essential microbes, according to new research! Moms can transfer the microbes to their little ones through alternative routes – so no need to worry! While cesarean-born babies receive fewer gut microbes from their moms during birth, they make up for it by drinking their mom’s microbes in breast milk. Fun fact: we house good microbial communities in other parts of our bodies like our respiratory tracts and skin! The study recruited 120 Dutch moms and their soon-to-be-born babies to understand how the microbiome develops during the first month of life. In conclusion, regardless of how the baby is born, approximately 58.5% of their microbiome is derived from their mom – that’s a lot of mom’s love!
