A recent study investigated the effects of using dishwasher detergents and rinse agents on gut epithelial cells. Researchers established liquid-liquid interfaces and performed various tests to evaluate cytotoxicity, barrier function, transcriptome, and protein expression. The results showed that the toxicity was caused by exposure to rinse aid and that it disrupted the epithelial barrier in a dose-dependent manner. Alcohol ethoxylates, a component of rinse aid, were identified as the cause of the epithelial inflammation and barrier damage. The study also found that detergent residue from professional dishwashers had a significant amount of cytotoxic and barrier-damaging rinse aid remaining on washed dishware. The results suggest that the use of dishwasher detergents and rinse agents can have negative effects on gut health and should be used with caution.
