Recent research has found a strong connection between the bacteria in our gut and our blood pressure. Scientists have been able to show that certain bacteria can cause our blood pressure to rise or fall, and that this can happen through several different mechanisms. These bacteria can produce certain metabolites that are either beneficial or detrimental to our blood pressure, and they can also activate pathways such as the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system, the autonomic nervous system, and the immune system. Researchers are now looking into ways to use this knowledge to help people with high blood pressure, such as through clinical trials, precision microbiome medicine and computational methods such as Mendelian randomization. By understanding how the bacteria in our gut can affect our blood pressure, we may be able to develop new treatments for high blood pressure in the future.
