If you think you’re not getting enough sleep, you might want to think twice – it could be impacting more than just your energy levels! A recent study published in the scientific journal Scientific Reports found that even short-term sleep deprivation can reduce the richness of your gut microbiota and cause inflammation. The study involved 24 healthy adults who underwent both a regular sleep period and a sleep restriction period of only two hours a night for three days. Results showed that, although the composition of the gut microbiota and intestinal permeability remained the same, the community richness was significantly lower after the sleep restriction period. This could lead to a decrease in the functional repertoire of the gut microbiota, which could have a negative effect on overall health. So, make sure to get your eight hours a night – it’s important for more than just a good mood!
