Is your gut causing diabetes or is diabetes causing a funky gut?

Researchers are on a mission to find out in a long-term study called MILES (Microbiome and Insulin Longitudinal Evaluation Study). They’ve recruited 350 non-diabetic participants who they’ll be following for over two years, checking in on their gut bacteria and glucose levels three times. Early results show that certain types of gut bacteria that produce a fatty acid called butyrate may be linked to better blood sugar control and a lower risk of diabetes. Butyrate has also been linked to healthy aging and a reduced risk of autoimmune diseases. However, not all butyrate-producing bacteria are created equal – some may actually raise the risk of diabetes. The researchers are still working to figure out if these bacteria are causing diabetes or if it’s the other way around. Hang tight for the follow-up paper to learn more.
