Have you ever experienced bad breath that just won’t go away no matter how many times you brush your teeth or use mouthwash? It turns out, the bacteria living on your tongue may be to blame!

A recent study looked at the gene expression patterns of these tiny tongue dwellers in people with and without bad breath, also known as halitosis. They found that certain types of bacteria were more common in people with fresh breath, while others were more likely to be found in people with bad breath.

So what does all of this mean? It turns out that the bacteria on your tongue could be working together to either produce or break down certain smelly compounds, like hydrogen sulfide. So next time you’re trying to freshen up your breath, consider giving your tongue a good scrub too!
