A new study from the University of Copenhagen has found that certain types of gut bacteria may be more efficient at extracting energy from food, which could explain why some people are more prone to weight gain. The researchers analyzed the gut bacteria and energy extraction of 85 overweight volunteers and found that those who were most efficient at extracting energy from their diet weighed about 10% more than those who were not as efficient. While it’s still not clear whether this link between energy extraction and weight gain is causal, the researchers suggest that the extra energy provided by gut bacteria through the metabolism of food may increase the risk of obesity over time. So, it’s possible that your gut bacteria could be partly to blame for those extra pounds!
